Aspectos reprodutivos do cangati, Parauchenipterus galeatus Linnaeus (Osteichthyes, Auchenipteridae) da Lagoa de Extremoz, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil Zoologia
Medeiros,Ana Patrícia T. de; Chellappa,Naithirithi T.; Chellappa,Sathyabama.
The Lake Extremoz is one of the three big lakes in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The present work was carried out in this lake during the period of October 2000 to September 2001, which included the dry and the rainy seasons. Parauchenipterus galeatus Linnaeus, 1766 represent 10% of the commercially important species captured from this lake. Fish samples were collected on a monthly basis, besides registering the rainfall, temperature, and dissolved oxygen of the lake. The populational structure of cangati and the stage of maturation of the gonads were determined, besides the gonadosomatic relation. The results indicate that the study population presented higher mean values of total length and weight during the dry season. Mature fishes were caught...

Behavior of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae (Cetacea: Balaenopteridae): comparisons between two coastal areas of Brazil Zoologia
Lunardi,Diana G.; Engel,Márcia H.; Macedo,Regina H. F..
Behavior of humpback whales was observed during the reproductive period off the northern coast of the state of Bahia (NB, n = 378 groups) and at the Abrolhos Bank (AB, n = 919) to compare patterns and group composition between the two locations. Alone individuals and dyads were most often encountered in both areas, although mother-calf pairs were more common in AB. While these two regions comprise distinct concentrations of humpback whales, with intrinsic environmental differences, behavior patterns were quite similar. The only behavioral differences found where for "tail up" and "resting". The patterns found here may reflect differences in the protection status of the areas or intrinsic environmental differences.

Biological information of Taunayia bifasciata (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae): a threatened and unknown catfish Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rondineli,Giulianna; Carmassi,Alberto Luciano; Braga,Francisco Manoel de Souza.
Taunayia bifasciata (Eigenmann & Norris, 1900) is a small catfish that inhabits headwater streams of the Tietê and Paraíba do Sul river basins, southeastern Brazil, being restricted to the Atlantic rain forest. The species is found on lists of threatened species of Brazil and the state of São Paulo. Despite that, there is no literature information about the biology of the species. In the present study we endeavored to collect data on the biology of T. bifasciata. A total of 37 specimens were captured in two streams, Piracuama and Oliveiras. Of those, 22 were females, 14 were males and 1 specimen was immature. Adults with mature gonads were captured in all samples excepting the last, suggesting that T. bifasciata has a long reproductive season. The...

Quality of pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) eggs and larvae in captivity throughout spawning season Neotropical Ichthyology
Chalde,Tomás; Elisio,Mariano; Miranda,Leandro A..
The aim of this work was to assess the quality of pejerrey eggs and larvae throughout its spawning season. Fertilized eggs were taken on September, October, November, and December from a captive broodstock. The egg diameter, yolk diameter, and oil droplets area decreased along the spawning season, with higher values in September. Fertilization and hatching rates decreased throughout this period, with highest values in September (88.0%; 55.2%) and the lowest values on December (43.0%; 25.2%). The larvae hatched from eggs obtained on October were the heaviest and longest (1.57 mg; 8.24 mm). The survival rate at 30 days post hatching (dph) was similar in larvae from September and October eggs (66.1%; 62.9%) with a sharp decrease in larvae from November and...
